Perspective on Logistics & Supply Chain Management Excellence
In her capacity as member
of the ELMA Award Committee, Asst. Prof. Dr. Tharinee Manisri, Director, Supply
Chain Intelligence Institute, Sripatum University, pointed out an
interesting perspective on Logistics & Supply Chain Management Excellence.
All three CP Group companies, which have won the ELMA Award in the category of
logistics service users, clearly had outstanding logistics and supply chain
management capability, from upstream through to downstream operations, along
with the concept of excellent Core Business Performance. These are crucial
factors which determine the characteristics of ELMA Award winners.
Lacking Coordination between Various Operational Processes
Mr. Akanit Smitabindu,
President, Purchasing and Supply Chain Management Association of Thailand, and
member of the ELMA Award Committee in the category of Logistics service
providers.
“The final round of on-site
visits to participating companies in the category of logistics service users allowed
the Committee to observe actual work procedures as compared to company
presentations. These on-site visits enabled us to pinpoint the strengths and
weaknesses of individual companies, hence the importance of the Committee’s
comments and recommendations based on actual observation during the on-site
visits. Some logistics business providers showed unique strength in terms of Corporate
Vision, and strong commitment to this Vision was discernible at the management
level through to operating staff. Although employees showed a clear understanding
of their work procedures, co-ordination between various operational processes was
still lacking. Companies that did not win the award were not too disappointed
because they are now capable of pursuing further organizational development. I
applaud all contestants in ELMA 2013 and encourage you to focus on continuous
improvement.

ELMA Committee Pleased with
Contestants’ Logistics Systems
Asst. Prof. Dr. Pongchai Athikomrattanakul,
Director, The Center of Logistics Excellence, King Mongkut’s University of
Technology Thonburi, voiced his opinion of ELMA 2013 as follows.
“In my capacity as member
of ELMA 2013 Committee responsible for assessing logistics service providers, I
applaud all the contestants, be they transport service providers, large or
small warehouse facilities. Overall most
companies are adequately efficient although some participants received fairly
low marks from the Committee. Personally
I am pleased that many participants are Thai companies. Even small scale enterprises managed to
identify their unique strengths while large players tried to improve IT systems
or services, or by making use of ELMA Committee’s recommendations for further
improvement. Winners of ELMA award should
maintain their track records while those who did not win can re-apply for next
year’s contest.”

Logistics Prototype for
Diverse Business Categories
Mr. Chumpol Saichuer,
Secretary, The Land Transport Federation of Thailand, and member of ELMA Award
Committee responsible for logistics service users expressed his opinion of this
year’s contestants as follows.
“Although a large number
participants run diverse business categories, each contestant has made
effective use of its unique logistic strength. It was difficult to decide who should be the
winner, given the diversity of business categories and different perspectives on
applying logistics tools to enhance competitiveness. In the final analysis, I think ELMA award winner
will be the prototype for excellent logistics management which business
enterprises in the same or similar category can emulate to improve their own
logistics systems.

Exporters’ Perspective on “The Road Map to Logistics Excellence”
Looking back on world trade trends in the past 3-4 years, Mr. Paiboon Ponsuwan, Advisor, Thai National Shippers’ Council (TNSC), noted the general consensus that no one can survive by doing business in the same old ways. This saying applies particularly to Thailand which now faces stiff competition from other ASEAN countries.
In order to survive, every large, medium and small-sized business is strongly advised to form a supply chain. If large companies do not look after medium-sized firms and the latter do not transfer knowledge and trade to small-sized companies, a catastrophe will arise. Transferring logistics knowledge and know-how has become crucial factor in business and economic development.
The Thai National Shippers’ Council is determined to support members and to create awareness that future business transactions will require not only reasonable pricing but also quality assurance and continuous upgrading in order to sustain customer satisfaction.
ELMA 2013 follows a succession of previous ELMA awards. It is a living proof of our commitment to continuous improvement of logistics services, not only in regard to product quality but also accurate services and on-time delivery which are pre-requisite factors for successful business undertaking.
By creating awareness among logistics service providers of the importance of advance planning, accurate product delivery, ELMA makes sure that both the award winners and those who do not receive this year’s award will adopt a pro-active approach and implement these quality precepts to ensure their future survival.

Creating Standards for Export Logistic Services
Commenting on ELMA, Mr. Danai Galassi, Senior Vice President, Supply Chain Management, Charoen Pokphand Foods Public Co., Ltd. (CPF), noted the significance of the 2013 Export Logistics Model Award, considering the urgent need to prepare for the launching of the ASEAN Economic Community.
By establishing networks and developing standardized practices, participants in ELMA 2013 will benefit from their hard earned efforts to upgrade internal operational processes and implement quality standards that will surely enhance customer confidence and organizational efficiency.

Pass criteria and get ELMA award
As it is customary to organize the annual ELMA Award contest this time of the year, many entrepreneurs are wondering how to prepare for the event. This first thing is to make internal preparation within your own organization by looking at your data. After that you can call a meeting of the management team and key staff members to identify any operational area wherein your organization has achieve logistics excellence.
This project does not require you to compete with anyone. If you can pass all the assessment criteria that have been set by ELMA Board, (without competing with anyone), you have a chance to win the ELMA award.
Do not worry that you may not win the award. At least you will have prepared one set documents that will serve as your organization’s Bible outlining the path towards logistics excellence. The Board will have a set of criteria to assess your organization’s logistics performance and determine whether you pass those criteria or not.
You are all invited to participate in this event because in the real business world you will have to face very stiff competition. But by participating in the ELMA 2013 Award you will be able to identify your strengths and weaknesses, as well as a reflection of your own business performance. You will also learn to assess the results of your management performance. Last but not least, winning the award will be an achievement that your organization can take great pride in. I take this opportunity to congratulate in advance all potential participants in this year’s ELMA award!

Customer Satisfaction more important than winning the award
Mr. Witsakorn Srisakul,
Managing Director, KWC Warehouse, is one of the LSPS who are interested in
joining ELMA 2013.
ELMA award is a highly coveted prize which promotes upgrading of local business enterprises such as KWC which operates a warehouse management business. This award requires compliance with the same quality standards as the Malcolm Baldridge Quality Award which applies the highest world class quality assessment criteria. Secondly, I am in favor of self-assessment from the perspective of customers as well as the management team. Lastly, if we decide to participate in this contest, we will be assessed by a third party and at the same time make use of this opportunity to improve our own organization. This project will not only benefit the company but more importantly our own customers.
