How Important is ELMA for International Trade Promotion?

In this era of free trade, fast and furious changes in a globalized market, producing quality goods is in fact a primary competitive factor.  Due to endless buyers’ demand for ever increasing diversity and delivery speed, business transactions have become highly complex.

To meet the growing complexity of trade and business transactions, logistics system is a management tool to increase competitiveness as well as quick and accurate response to market demand.  By effectively controlling production and service costs, systematic data management sustains comparative advantage, easy access to raw material sources, speedy and efficient production, transportation and distribution.

Realizing the monumental challenges facing local businesses and traders, the Department of International Trade Promotion has been active in organizing the Export Logistics Model Award for the past 6 years. This year, results of the 7 ELMA Award will be announced during the Thailand International Logistics Fair on September 4, 2013.

ELMA is a quality award and world class trade logo which is recognized in domestic and international forums.  It is also a marketing tool which enhances the bearer’s competitive edge by testifying to the capacity to deliver products and services in the most efficient manner.  Selection of outstanding Trade Logistics Management in the categories producers, importers/exporters and logistics service providers (LSPs) will rely on assessment criteria that cover quality standards as well as operational efficiency, based on the concepts and criteria for evaluating business performance and logistics management that are widely recognized, namely, the Malcolm Baldrige Framework, European Framework for Quality Management, and the Supply Chain Operation Reference (SCOR) Model.

ELMA challenges international business enterprises and Thai logistics service providers to undertake an assessment by benchmarking their organization against world class players.  Although some enterprises may not win this year’s award they will benefit from identifying their actual status and preparing for the onslaught of fierce market competition in a free trade zone.
